Changing jobs, the iLab experience

Current Mood:Cool emoticon Cool

As has already been published I will be joining a new Avusa Media division called the iLab on April 1st as their Lead Developer. This means that I will be leaving Opteq where I have felt very much at home for the last couple of years.

The iLab is Avusa Media’s new commercial applications division where we will be creating on-line, off-line and mobile applications. I will be working with Colin Daniels (Publisher: Times on-line), Justin Hartman (Digital Innovation Manager), Gregor Rohrig (New Media Specialist) and a graphic designer who remains nameless. Its already a formidable team and I am sure that great things await.

This of course means me bidding farewell to my current employer Opteq, which is sad for me for many reasons. So A big thank you is owed to everyone at Opteq who has made my journey an unforgettable one and the knowledge I gained there has laid a great foundation for future developments. To all my friends at Opteq, thanks for the great memories and I am sure that this isn’t goodbye. I wish you guys all the success and happiness in the world.

Stay tuned, exciting times lay ahead!

Zambia Rocks!

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Wow, two posts in one evening :P

A while ago I went on business to Zambia. I flew with SAA to Zambia and it went without any hassle. In fact we got there in record time - the flight is supposed to be 2 hrs long, but it took us only an hour and 20 minutes to get there. Once I was there though it went pear shaped for a while. I get there and customs say that I must pay import duties for the Opteq device that I am carrying. I say thats fine, they must tell me how much it is because they dont accept credit cards so I have to go to the exchange office outside. Fine they say and they write down 165,000 kwatcha. My heart hit the floor until I realised that the exchange rate was quite good for us and that turned out to be only around ZAR 350 (about USD $50). Once that was all sorted I had missed the bus to the hotel so I had to catch a taxi to the hotel from the airport which cost another 150,000 for about a 10-15 minute drive. I checked in with little hassle and went up to my room until the next day when I went to Oxfam.
